Bermuda Football Association president Neville Tyrrell and general secretary David Sabir secured the cash boost in a meeting with FIFA's director of national associations, Jurg Nepher.

Nepher's job includes recommendation of funding for soccer projects around the world and proposals put forward by the BFA duo apparently met with his approval.

"I'm happy to say that eveything we put forward was approved by FIFA,'' said Sabir.

Last season was a torrid one for the domestic game, marred by violence, boycotts of matches by players and declining attendances.

And Coca-Cola's withdrawal of their First Division sponsorship only added to the difficulties faced by the BFA. But Sabir hoped FIFA's backing would help the game on its way to better times.

Though Sabir was unable to discuss details until he and Tyrrell had reported to the BFA executive committee, he was clearly elated with the outcome of the meeting, which took place during a FIFA congress in Los Angeles last week.

"We can now look in the mirror and see hope,'' said Sabir. "We have tried to drum up support for our domestic sport and we will keep on trying.

"This support is not of the scale to put off sponsors -- on the contrary, it is a good time for them to come forward and add to FIFA's support.'' Sabir said the FIFA backing was aimed at helping with the cost of technical training, coaching courses and improvement of facilities.
