Fighting mars boring draw
Unfortunately for those on hand at last night's Friendship Trophy match between PHC and Devonshire Colts most of the action came after the final whistle had blown.
A mini melee broke out between players and fans of the two sides following the game which ended in a 1-1 draw and will have to be replayed at a later date.
The Zebras came out inspired by the inclusion of former English professional Meshach Wade, who produced dividends in his first domestic game of the season with a spectacular goal towards the end of the first half.
In fact the boys from Warwick looked to have booked a place in the final against North Village as that goal held up deep into the second half.
But as was the case against Boulevard in a recent league match, they wilted late and Colts were able to produce a period of sustained pressure that ultimately led to full-back Anthony (Toe) Wilson scoring the equaliser.
However, a draw was a fitting end to a match that failed to rise above the level of mediocrity and led one to wonder how the pair were able to get this far, let alone challenge for a final spot.
The first half was fairly even with most play occurring in the middle of the park where PHC's trio of Dana Rawlins, Ottis Steede and Wade engaged in a struggle against their Colts counterparts of Jahmal Samuels, Mark Ray and Yul Wade.
PHC won most of these battles only to have plays break down on reaching their forwards.
Ellington Weldon of Colts had the first crack at breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute when he connected on a bouncing ball into the middle by Keenan Burchall, but booted his shot high over the crossbar.
Next to take the stage 10 minutes later was Keishon Smith and while he did manage to get the ball on target it presented little difficulty to PHC goalkeeper Carlyle Crockwell who collected cleanly.
Then came the cracker from Wade in the 35th minute as he received a ball in the middle from Raynel Lightbourne and from almost on his back volleyed home through a maze of players into the roof of the net.
Both sides came out for the second half rejuvenated somewhat and Craig Smith quickly announced his intentions forcing the PHC defence to scramble away a dangerous cross.
Winston Trott followed with the Zebras' reply in the 58th minute likewise forcing centre-back Chris Wright to boot away what seemed a certain goal.
Weldon popped up again in three minutes hence, weaving his way between defenders and finding space in close only to hesitate at a vital moment, allowing Mike Dill to recover and avert the threat.
At this point the tide began to shift firmly in Colts' favour as they pressed forward in attack.
The equaliser finally came a minute into injury time from the unlikely form of Wilson who took advantage of PHC's failure to clear a loose ball to blast it past the left shoulder of Crockwell into the roof of the net. Wilson's first goal of the season means that Colts live to fight another day. The eventual winner of this tie will meet North Village in the final.

Fired BFA administrative assistant Joe Brown confirmed last night that he will go ahead with a suit against the association for unfair dismissal, on the advice of his lawyer Richard Hector.
Brown was dismissed from his $41,000 a year post on January 19 and sought legal advice immediately.
"We were hoping somebody within the association would have enough voice to say this is wrong and let's go back and review this thing, but this has not taken place,'' said Brown.
