Final flight is a family affair for British Airways captain
fly from on his last trip -- and there was definitely only one co-pilot he required to do the flight with him.
So, last night as the captain took the controls of the Boeing 777 and took off from Bermuda -- it was his son John who sat alongside him as first officer.
The trip was all arranged as Captain Macaulay's farewell to BA, where he has spent the last 29-and-a-half years flying.
"For this last trip I wanted to do Bermuda because it is such a nice trip,'' said John snr. "My son came into BA last year, we have flown together before and as this is my last trip I requested him as my co-pilot.
"As far as the trip goes, I am the captain and he is the first officer -- but it is rather pleasant to have him there for the flight. "He takes the orders, as always!'' Accompanying the pair will be a five-strong family contingent, ready to mark the moment that Capt. Macaulay signs off after arriving at Gatwick.
"It will just be a case of parking the aircraft and walking away,'' he joked.
For First Officer Macaulay, it was quite an achievement being allowed to fly to and from Bermuda, having only been with BA for six months.
The pair flew in on the 777 on Saturday and the family have been enjoying Bermuda for the last few days.
"There was a possibility we could fly together but it was tremendous when he was allowed to choose who he would like to do his final trip with,'' said the son.
Capt. Macaulay was a training pilot on the 777 and has flown to Bermuda many times before.
He first flew here in 1969 on a training mission with the Royal Air Force.
