Finally, Bassler's boys triumph

Pro-Am Invitational at Castle Harbour yesterday and then said: "It's taken me 11 years to do this.'' Bassler and team-mates Bill Stair, John Gaino and Jeff Morseberger maintained their three stroke lead throughout the final round of the 54-hole competition to clinch the net division from Woburn Country Club, led by last year's Belmont Invitational winner Paul Parajeckas.

Bassler joked: "One of my guys, who's also been coming down here for 11 years, said it had cost him $30,000 to win a trophy. It was worth it at last.

"I had to whip my guys into shape pretty good but in the end it was an admirable performance.'' Rolling Road and Woburn both shot net scores of 130 yesterday in the four-ball two-best-ball tournament which ran its course after interruptions from the weather and eruptions from a number of the players' stomachs.

Bassler admitted that all members of his team had at one time been affected by the bug which caused a mini-epidemic among visitors and guests at the Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel.

But he added: "All four of us managed to get out there on all three days so that was a plus.'' It was a plus also for tournament sponsor, restaurateur Fritz Reiter, a member of the Woburn team, who had at one point considered abandoning the event because of the epidemic.

Eagles Golf Club, skippered by Jim Blanks, finished third, with Camelback, led by Bob Augustine, in fourth.

Meanwhile, the Huntingdon Country Club foursome, captained by Jim Smoot, triumphed in the gross division, with Jim Gunnare's Woodstock Inn & Golf Club second and Tom Smack's Sagamore team third.
