Fine tune-up for Wellman

Olympics with an impressive fourth-place finish at the Lausanne Grand Prix in Switzerland yesterday.

The two-time defending NCAA champion jumped 55 feet, 61 inches to place only behind Leonid Voloshin of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) who posted 56-111 , and Americans Mike Conley (56-11) and Charlie Simpkins (56-41 ).

Trailing Wellman in the eight-man field were Oleg Protsenko of the CIS (55-21 ), Jonathan Edwards of Britain (55-1), Aleksandr Kovalenko of the CIS (53-103 ) and Jan Cado of Czechoslovakia (53-71 ).
