Floodlight delay leaves Town in the dark
Dandy Town have been forced to delay plans to stage their first night match at St. John's Field because of problems with their brand new floodlights.
But club president Cecil Lewis has vowed the situation will be rectified soon.
The team were to make their floodlit home debut against Hotels on Friday but Bermuda Football Association, after consultation with the club, switched the game to Sunday.
"We ordered parts for the lights about three or four weeks ago but they still haven't arrived,'' explained Lewis, who estimated it could be another month before matches go ahead under lights.
Lewis said other work was also still being carried out, like the building of a new cesspit.
"We are definitely looking to entertain night games there this season,'' added Lewis.
The availability of St. John's Field for night matches would help ease the backlog of matches, especially with PHC Stadium still not hosting night games because of problems with their lights. That has left Somerset, Devonshire Rec.
and BAA Field to stage all night matches so far this season.
Next week all three grounds will be used for rescheduled FA Cup first round matches which have to be completed in time for the quarter-finals, scheduled for February 15. Only Southampton Rangers and Wolves, both 4-2 winners on December 14, are through to the quarter-finals.
Vasco and Hotels and PHC and Devonshire Colts will meet on Tuesday night at BAA Field. Town and St. David's and Prospect and Devonshire Cougars will battle next Wednesday at Devonshire Rec, and North Village will meet St.
George's and Somerset will take on Boulevard at Somerset next Thursday.
The outstanding First Division match from the first half of the season should finally be played tonight at Devonshire Rec. when Devonshire Cougars entertain Vasco at 8.00.
This match between the top and bottom teams in the First Division is important for both sides. Vasco are looking to break a tie for first place with Boulevard and open a three-point lead while Cougars need a victory to keep alive their survival hopes. They are presently tied on eight points at the bottom with PHC. Somerset Trojans are three points ahead in eighth place.
Bermuda's new Senior Soccer League kicked off on Monday night at Somerset with 19 goals scored in two matches.
Warwick Bombardiers beat Cleveland 7-4 in the opening match while the second contest saw Dock Hill Rangers stop West End Rovers 5-3.
Sam Nusum, better known in his day for stopping goals as one of Bermuda's top goalkeepers, showed he can score them too as he played up front and netted once for Bombardiers.
Allan Fray and `Rocky' Hassell both scored twice and Anthony (Toe) Dill and Oscar Samuels the others. Merkel Smith, Sherwin (Dickie) Hollis, Allan Douglas and J.R. Lambert replied for Cleveland.
David Burch and Clarence (Nipper) Parsons both scored twice to lead Dock Hill over a short-handed West End while George Ray got the other. Samuels, who also played with West End to make up the numbers, netted one of their goals while Dennis Brangman and Gladstone Robinson also tallied.
