Flook leads team to Canada
Waterloo Invitational Meet which begins on Friday and continues until Sunday night.
Many of the swimmers will attempt to qualify for the Caribbean Championships, scheduled for Jamaica in July, and also the Commonwealth Games, which takes place in Victoria, Canada, in August.
Leading the contingent will be Chris Flook, the CAC silver and bronze medalist in the 100 and 200 metres respectively, who has already qualified for Victoria. Other senior members will be Trevor Ferguson, Stephen Fahy and Craig Ferguson, considered one of the hardest workers of the freestyle team.
National coach Gareth Davies will be accompanying the group and said yesterday the most significant challenge for the swimmers will be adapting to the long-course pool. The Bermuda youths will also be kept busy, since many of them will be swimming in as many as eight events over the two-and-a-half days.
Other top age group members travelling to Canada will be Matthew Hammond (freestyle, backstroke), Nicholas Ven de Weg (freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke) and William Massey (short freestyle, butterfly).
Trevor Nelson, who broke the 200 metres breakstroke mark in the 14 year old age group ( 2:43.59) at last weekend's Spring Series meet, will also be going.
He qualified for the Caribbean championships by breaking Ian Tucker's long-standing mark. Nelson will also be involved in freestyle and medley events.
The Spring Series was the first official meet of the season.
"I don't put a lot of pressure on the meet,'' Davies stressed yesterday during a break from teaching at Whitney Institute.
"This is just a competition. But most of all it's an excellent opportunity for these kids to swim a lot and work out different techniques and various approaches to races. The fact that it's a long course pool is crucial.'' The meet is build-up to the season and National Championships where qualifying times will have to be made for Jamaica and Victoria. The event takes place at the BASA Pool from June 17-19.
"That's where these kids will really need to come up with good times if they want to qualify,'' said Davies. "I will be encouraging them to critique their performances, they'll be filling out forms after each event.''
