Football at a standstill
meeting between executives of the Bermuda Referees Association (BRA) and the Bermuda Football Association failed to achieve resolution.
The two parties are due to hold more talks through the weekend, but sure to be lost are today's Commercial and Reserve Division matches, along with tomorrow's full slate of Premier and First Division fixtures as referees continue their boycott.
An urgent meeting has been called for all clubs and Bermuda Football Association affiliates at Young Men's Social Club tomorrow (2 p.m.) when a full discussion will take place on how to curb the on-field violence which sparked the referees' boycott.
Exactly one week ago the situation regarding violence in the local gamed reached untenable proportions -- at least in the view of BRA members -- with North Village Rams player Kacy Simons attacking referee Perry Scott, leaving the latter with facial injuries that required hospital treatment.
Simons was on Tuesday arrested by Police in connection with the incident.
He was suspended by North Village for five years on Wednesday, and had the BFA effectively end his soccer career when it issued a 12-year ban.
Government MP Randy Horton last night called for talks between the referees and the BFA to continue. See Monday's Royal Gazette for his remarks in full, or go to The Royal Gazette's website, www.accessbda.bm, today.
