Fourteen boats answered the race committee's gun as the Etchells 22 sailed in the seventh and eighth races for the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's Hurst Trophy

In addition to the regular skippers, Ward Young sailed KB5 and Darcy Hildenberg KB14. Derek Pedro made his season debut and Steve Hannon was at the helm of KB15. After a six week absence, Scott Simmons was back in charge of KB16.

Both races were of the windward/leeward variety and yachtsmen had their hands full with shifting, oscillating winds from a westerly direction between eight to 12 knots.

Timmy Patton captured the first race aboard KB4 with good distance and ahead of Simmons, who finished in second spot with Bill McNiven grabbing third.

Closely behind was Stevie Dickinson sailing KB7 for the partnership of Dennis Correia and Michael Tatem in fourth place. After that it was Ron Stan aboard KB3, Ward Young with KB5 and Brett Ward on KB12.

The second race produced an exciting finish with many racers vying for the lead. That lead changed hands several times between Simmons, McNiven, Young and Patton. Patton was first across the line by only a slight margin of a few feet over McNiven, followed by Young and Simmons. BASEBALL BB The English Sports Shop Phillies continued their dominance of the Bermuda Youth Sports Baseball Programme Rookie League as they squeezed out a 9-9 tie over arch-rivals and second-place Baton Swan Reds on Saturday.

In other rookie league games, The Bank of Bermuda Royals grabbed a tie for second place when they defeated the Butterfield & Steinhoff Mariners 7-6. In the only other encounter the Ace Mets beat Bermuda Forwarders Pirates 12-4 in a slugfest.

In a Little League game, Mailboxes Unlimited Cardinals clobbered the Island Press Mariners 23-9 to stay atop the standings.
