Gibbons hammers an unbeaten 127

Veteran all-rounder Noel Gibbons has cracked his way into England's Essex League record books following a lightning century in a recent evening match.

The former Bailey's Bay and St. George's Cup Match star hammered an unbeaten 127 for his new club, Buckhurst, in a 20-overs match against Essex League team Snarsbrook.

It is believed to be the first century in the evening league's 19-year history.

Gibbons' team went on to win comfortably, amassing 175 for three and then dismissing their opponents for 84.

Gibbons' ton included 18 fours and three sixes.

Since that game, Gibbons scored an unbeaten 82 against Essex League opponents Hornsey who replied to Buckhurst's 198 all out with 201 for eight.

The Bermuda player has also taken part in a match against a touring Indian Select, including four Test players, in which he scored 18 and took one wicket for 46 in a losing cause.

The following have been selected for St. George's to play in a Cup Match trial against Bailey's Bay for the Cal Wade Memorial Trophy at Sea Breeze Oval, starting at noon on Saturday.

Graham Fox (captain), Dexter Smith, Wendell Smith, Clevie Wade, David Adams, Ricky Hodsoll, Lionel Cann, Eugene Foggo, Lewis Foggo, Dale Fox, Arnold Manders, Ryan Steede, Del Tyrell. Players are to report at field by 11 a.m.

JUNIOR GOLF GLF In a bid to enhance the accessibility of golf to local youth over the summer months a junior clinic will be held involving four clubs -- Ocean View, Mid Atlantic Boat Club, St. George's Golf Club and Port Royal.

Spearheading the clinic/competition, which will see the youngsters taking in the various local courses on a rotating basis until September 16, is Ocean View club professional Alex Madeiros, assisted by Michael Daniels.

The clinic instructs participants in the basic skills of the game, including proper etiquette as well as the proper use of clubs in regard to driving, putting and chipping.

As a culmination a nine-hole `graduation' tournament will be held at Horizons Golf Club on September 16, with a prize-giving to follow.

SNOOKER SNO The Bermuda Snooker League elected a new management committee at their recent annual general meeting.

President: Zane DeSilva; Vice-president: Ed Gumbs; Secretary: Greg Falzone; Treasurer: Stephen Pantry. Also: Nick Mansell and Lawrence DeSilva.

The league has also set aside funds to assist the Bermuda team for next year's International Snooker League competition in Aberdeen, Scotland.

SOCCER SOC There will be a training session for all members of Commercial Division team Exiles on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. at Shelly Bay field.
