Goal-happy Rams stun defending champions
wide after all.
Newly-promoted North Village Rams, who have scored 28 goals in just three Commercial League Cup matches, and Fire Service certainly gave the top sides something to think about after shock wins on Saturday.
Rams, winners of Group B last season, celebrated their entry into the A Division by beating champions BAA Wanderers 3-2 while Fire Service edged by Island Rangers, third last season, 1-0.
The Rams secured their victory in spectacular fashion as their equalising and winning goals came in the last 10 minutes of the match after Wanderers had led 2-1.
Village hero was former Bermuda international Kenny Thompson who marked his debut in the Commercial League with goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes (the second a penalty) as his team completed an exciting fightback.
William Kirkpatrick, another former First Division player, gave Wanderers the lead in the 30th minute only for Allan Fray to equalise for Rams five minutes before the break.
Steve Irvine shot BAA back in front in the 65th minute and they were hanging on for victory when Thompson's late goals turned the match around.
Wanderers, who won the championship by 11 points over Robin Hood last season, lost just once in the league.
Fire Service picked up their first win when Ranay Boyles' strike was enough to give them the points against Island Rangers.
Robin Hood were the only top team from last season to win, thumping Mariners 3-0 with Dominic Critchley leading the way with two goals and Jar McCabe getting the other.
Des Minors hit the first hat-trick in the division as Spinning Wheel beat MR Onions 4-2. Keith Bell got the other Spinning Wheel goal.
Also in Group A, Lobster Pot blanked St. George's All-Stars 3-0 with goals from Anthony Smith, Andy McGuinness and Niall Moffat.
In Group B, Somerset Extros came from 3-1 down at half-time to thrash Belco 8-3 while Prison Officers squeezed out a 3-2 win over Exiles. D.Leader scored twice for Officers and Charlie Fox the other while Allan Johnson hit both Exiles goals.
The matches between Wolves and Forties and Devonshire Lions and Valley were postponed.
North Village Rams are already through to the final of Group I in the Commercial League Cup B, blasting Wolves 10-2 in the semi-final. Village now await the winners of the Fire-Valley semi-final which is scheduled for Thursday night at Somerset.
