Goal-happy Vasco march on
Vasco extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven games, blasting away Somerset in front of their own crowd on Saturday night.
And the names on the scoresheet had a familiar ring to them with Dennis Robinson, Dwight Basden, Sinclair Gibbons and substitute Ascento Russell all netting. Somerset's late reply came from Sean Simmons.
Vasco meant business from the kick-off, taking the lead in the 13th minute when Basden received the ball inside the 18 yard box and hammered his shot to the right of keeper Williams who couldn't reach it despite being at full stretch.
Somerset might have evened the score in the 16th minute had not goalkeeper Timmy Figureido twice been alert, first to tip over Shannon Morrissey's free kick and then to snatch the ball off the head of Rodney Bascome from a corner.
Vasco, though, increased their lead with Dennis Robinson's opportunist strike in the 30th minute. Robinson pounced on a rebound from a corner to drill home from ten yards.
Vasco went seeking further goals in the second half and midfielder Tafari Outerbridge launched a shot akin to a guided missile from 30 yards which went just wide of the upright five minutes after the interval.
They got the third in the 56th minute when Sinclair Gibbons scored with a spectacular volley from 12 yards after a timely lob pass from Basden.
Then nine minutes after Ascento Russell had replaced Keith Jennings in the 70th minute, Russell hit a beautiful dipping shot from 30 yards to beat Williams again.
Somerset's consolation goal came in the 88th minute when Sean Simmons ran through Vasco's defence to score a fine solo effort.
