Goater, City get last chance

via the Second Division play-offs when they travel to Brentford tomorrow for their semi-final second leg.

Striker Shawn Goater, who was just voted as Player of the Year by City fans through a competition carried in the Evening Post newspaper, says the match will be his most important as a professional in England next to the Auto Windscreens final last season when he appeared at Wembley.

Now another appearance at Wembley on Sunday will depend on the team's ability to turn around their 2-1 home defeat in the first leg by getting a good result at Brentford.

"I've been told they don't have the best of home records,'' said Goater, looking forward to the deciding leg after which only one team will remain in the hunt for promotion to the First Division.

"We know what we've got to do, we've got to win. We were all in (to train) today and obviously we are upset with the result.

"But if we take a negative attitude into that game then we stand no chance.

"I will be so disappointed to end the season having not gone to Wembley with the opportunity being there.'' The odds are clearly in Brentford's favour as the away win means that they can now only draw at home to advance to the play-off final against the winners of Crewe and Luton. Crewe won their first leg meeting 2-1 at home.

Brentford took the lead in the first half before City equalised through captain Gary Owers, only to see Bretford restore the lead two minutes later.

"They started a bit brighter than us and that is what cost us the game,'' said Goater. "The second half just played itself out. We put a lot of pressure on them but they defended well and stopped us from scoring that equalising goal. The only good thing to look at is we know what we've got to do. Nothing is beyond what we are capable of doing. We still have a chance and in a sense it is still half-time.'' CITY LIGHT -- Shawn Goater's Bristol City team face a must-win situation today in order to keep their hopes alive of moving into the English First Division.
