Goater fashions City goal to earn vital point
Shaun Goater was in the right place at the right time to help Manchester City grab a much-needed league point against Premiership giants, Liverpool last night.
City drew 1-1 at Maine Road thanks to a Danny Tiatto equaliser in the second half, but it was the Bermudian who fashioned the opportunity for him.
The Blues were a goal down to Emile Heskey's opener towards the end of the first half of a game from which they needed to get something to help in their fight against relegation.
With Costa Rican Paulo Wanchope out of favour Goater was paired up front with Darren Huckerby.
And within two minutes of the start of the second period the Islander made his telling contribution. Huckerby's pass rebounded off Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz and fell into the path of Goater who fed the ball onto Tiatto.
The Australian didn't need a second invitation and fired into the roof of the net to give City what turned out to be a deserved share of the spoils.
Goater had been at the heart of the action for much of the match and when he flicked the ball onto Huckerby midway through the first-half only a timely intervention from Reds' defender Sami Hyypia prevented a goalscoring chance.
As the half drew on England international Stephen Gerrard accidentally gave possession to Goater but unfortunately he squandered the chance by firing over the bar.
WELLMAN WINS ARKANSAS MEET -- BERMUDA BRIEF MJW ATH RG P21 1.2.2001 Wellman wins Arkansas meet Bermudian triple jumper Brian Wellman showed signs of improvement in form since his Olympic disappointment when he won a meet in the US last weekend.
Wellman won the University of Arkansas Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville with a best jump of 16.82 metres (55 feet, 21 inches).
That was considerably better than his best jump in Sydney last September when he jumped 16.47 metres and failed to qualify for the final, but still well short of his personal best of 17.72.
Second in the triple jump in Fayetteville was American Rob Howard, of the Reebok team, who jumped 16.76 metres.
Wellman was not the only Bermudian taking part as Devon Bean (featured on page 23) was competing in the 60 metres sprint.
Bean, who intends to concentrate on his best event, the long jump, this year, finished fourth in heat five in a time of 7.08 seconds -- not quick enough to qualify for the final.
