Goater scores goal number 20
English Second Division.
And considering Bristol City's recent form, Tuesday's winner away to Crewe was probably one of his most important. City have been running hot and cold of late, losing at home recently to bottom team Rotherham and then away to Blackpool on Saturday to slip to 10th in the standings.
But the 2-1 win over Crewe, sixth in the standings, revives their hopes of a promotion playoff spot. They are two points away from the play-off zone and have eight games remaining, though most of the teams above them have more games in hand.
Goater's 72nd minute winner makes him the fourth player in the Second Division to reach the 20-goal mark this season. Now the Bermnudian, a bargain buy at 175,000 last summer, has his sights on passing the 24 goals he netted for Rotherham last season.
Kyle Lightbourne, who was back in Bermuda last week for his grandmother's funeral, returned to the Walsall team on the weekend and scored their goal in 3-1 home defeat against Burnley. That took Lightbourne's tally for the season to 19.
Lightbourne has been the subject of transfer speculation -- Coventry City had a 400,000 offer turned down weeks ago -- but with today being the deadline date for transfers it seems certain Lightbourne will remain with the club until the end of the season. At that time his contract will expire and he will become a free agent. He has already refused offers to sign a new contract.
On Saturday, City are at home to Gillingham while Walsall travel away to meet Rotherham.
