Golfing rivals eye showdown
meeting as the Mid Ocean Men's Invitational moved into the match play phase yesterday.
Marshall, the defending junior champion, had one of the shortest outings, easily dispatching Keith Hartley of Connecticut seven and six and moving onto the round of 16.
Meanwhile, at the bottom half of the draw Vallis, this year's medallist and a three-time winner, likewise made short work of his American foe, Donald Airey, going through six and four.
It was only a year ago that Marshall derailed Vallis' dreams of yet another championship when the former beat the retired physician two and one in the semi-finals before going on to defeat Doug Clark four and two in the final.
Reigning senior champion Dick Stimets moved into the quarter-finals on the tails of a six and four win over Leon Nearon.
However, the journey gets no easier for the Massachusetts resident, as he faces local challenger Jack Wahl in a rematch of the 1995 final.
Stimets won that contest handily eight and seven, but will be hard pressed to duplicate that margin against Wahl, who edged Tom Stearns one up yesterday.
A field of 128 players, most of them from overseas, entered this year's tournament.
