Griffin faces roadblock in Vogel

for a repeat in the Bermuda Women's Amateur Match Play Championship -- one round earlier than was anticipated.

A match-up between Griffin and Vogel was expected for the final but Vogel could only manage to finish fourth among the qualifiers and was thus paired in Griffin's half of the draw.

Yesterday both won their opening matches to advance to today's semi-finals; the champion beat Louise Munro five-and-four while Vogel stopped Bonnie Tyler three-and-two.

Pat Morgan will carry Bermuda's hopes into today's semi-finals when she goes up against visitor Helen Stovell. Both those matches were close with Morgan beating Susan Duffy one-up and Stovell eventually getting by Hannah Steel on the 20th hole.

Today's championship consolation semi-finals see Munro taking on Tyler and Steele playing Duffy.

In yesterday's first flight matches Shirley Wildi beat Ismay Johnson six-and-five while Kile Keever defeated Gill Riihiluoma five-and-four. Valerie Nearon and Cindy Semos made certain that three of the four semi-finals are local residents when they won their first flight matches. Nearon beat Molly McNichols three-and-two and Semos got by Bunny Whiteley five-and-four.

Whiteley has withdrawn from the tournament which gives McNichols free passage into tomorrow's first flight consolation final. She will await the winner of today's semi-final between Johnson and Riihiluoma.
