Harvey provides the inspiration

By Brian Toms A brilliant try by player-coach and MVP for the day Alvin Harvey mid-way through the second half, put the game beyond The Rest's reach and demonstrated the commitment that Teachers have for the most important match in their rugby calendar.

Harvey's try also involved two other players who were outstanding on the day.

Captain Bobby Hurdle, who had supported and tackled like a demon all game, started the movement by breaking several tackles on a storming run from his own half. Nathan Brown, who made some exceptional breaks during the game, took the ball on with one of his straight runs and offloaded it to Andre Simmons who unselfishly passed inside to Harvey.

But it was Harvey, playing in his 16th season for the 1st XV, who showed the younger players how the game should be played. Full of tenacity in defence, deceptiveness in attack and inspiration in his attitude, Harvey truly had one of his best games in a red shirt.

The Rest's scrum had constantly crumpled under the Teachers drive but Josh McGavern amazingly still managed to distribute the ball to Phil Heaney who, even though on the back foot, made efforts to move the ball through Alan Oliver who used his old repertoire of moves to try and fox the opposition.

The move that worked most effectively was one where Danny McGavern burst through on different running angles from full back. However, McGavern was found wanting in defence, where on two occasions, with enough time to clear his line, he was easily caught and forced over his own goal line by intense pressure from Teachers' back line.

Heath Robinson scored first after three minutes when he beat Danny McGavern in a 50-metre race to the touchdown after chipping ahead from his own half.

Following 15 minutes of intense pressure in the Rest's 25 meters, lock forward Pat Drea crashed over following a neat pop pass from Ross Webber.

Danny McGavern was then sin-binned for a late tackle on Webber just before half time with the score at 15-0.

The Rest fought back bravely in the second half with Josh McGavern, Oliver, Rod Stewart and Simon Hurstenstein making significant inroads into the Teachers half.

But Brian Desmond got on the scoreboard after fellow prop Deveray Noel-Simmons had brushed off two tacklers. With the score at 25-0 and 15 minutes left on the clock, Teachers' lock Mike Sutton was controversially sent off for a late tackle on, and subsequent fracas with, Josh McGavern, who was also sin-binned for his retaliation. Webber finished the match with two penalty kicks in the final 10 minutes for a personal haul of 16 points.
