Competing at the Vermont Triathlon Championships over the weekend the older Herring won his age group while Matthew was second in his category.

Jonathan recorded an impressive one-hour, 58-minute clocking for the half-mile swim, 27-mile bike and five-mile run that also saw him place sixth overall in a field of over 180 competitors.

In almost perfect conditions, National Squad swimmer Jonathan was expectedly strong in that discipline and rode well on the undulating bike course. With his limited run training this year due to swimming commitments, he was cautious at the start, and this strategy that paid off as he finished strongly.

Although he was almost a half-hour slower in 2:27:43, Matthew was pleased with his race which saw him capture second place in his age category.

The youngsters now move on to the Killington Stage Race in Vermont where they will be supporting their friend, Tyler Butterfield, who will be competing in the five-day stage race for the first time.

Butterfield has been in the US for over a week, training and racing in the Pennsylvania area in preparation for the race.

Two Bermuda residents turned in creditable performances at the Triathlon World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Sunday.

Competing in the 30-34 age group, Neil de Ste Croix finished 74th in a men's field of 87 while Heather Brand placed 44th out of 48 starters in the women's division.

De Ste Croix turned in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and 56 seconds while Brand's time was 2:54:34.
