Hit-man Harold fires Forties towards title

Opener Harold Minors smashed five sixes in an explosive unbeaten 57 and pace bowler David Jarrett grabbed six wickets as leaders Forties tightened their grip on the Commercial Cricket League title with a four-wicket victory over rivals Watford Sports Club in an extraordinary match at Nationals.

Skipper Ian Coke produced a fine all-round performance to guide Jamaican Association to a 105-run win over St. David's at Lord's while defending champions Leg Trappers ended a miserable run of four defeats by beating Devonshire Stars by 53 runs at Garrison Field. Each team played one short.

Rain ruined Sunday's other fixture between North Village and West Indian Association at Shelly Bay, robbing former Western Stars and Cup Match batsman Andre Manders of the chance to open his account for Village.

No matches are scheduled this weekend.

Minors, who celebrated his 44th birthday last Monday, stood firm as wickets clattered around him -- five of them to Blake West -- to blast Forties to their modest victory target of 72 on a difficult pitch in only 15 overs and push them 23 points clear with three games left.

Minors was particularly severe on former national team pace bowler Tacoma Robinson, whose three overs went for 33, hitting his first and last balls for six, the final one when the scores were level.

Earlier, after rain delayed the start until 1.33 p.m., Watford -- the only team who can now deny Forties their first league title since 1993 -- took 19 balls to get off the mark but were progressing well at 35 for one from 13 overs.

Then the 14th saw David DeSilva run out for 12 and Michael Corday caught for 22, triggering a stunning collapse that saw nine wickets tumble for just 36 runs. Andrew Paynter, dropped before he had scored, made 17.

League veteran Jarrett, operating from the northern end where West later enjoyed similar success, finished with superb figures of six for 16 from 14 overs -- six of them maidens.

But Forties, who had 53 overs to reach their target, fared just as poorly on a strip being used for the first time this season -- apart from Minors whose five sixes sailed over or close to the clubhouse, his innings also containing four threes, four twos and seven singles.

Next highest scorer was Alleyne Francis who made eight, West finishing with five for 20 from seven overs. In all, there were only three extras in the match -- three wides in the Watford total.

Skipper Coke topscored with 48 (eight fours and a six) as Jamaican Association were dismissed for 219 in the 37th over and then claimed five for 30 -- all bowled -- in nine overs as St. David's subsided to 114 all out in the 32nd over.

Other major contributions in the Jamaican innings came from Courtney Sinclair (41), Arthur Dublin (32) and Junior Lindo (29) while skipper George Cannonier picked up four for 63 from 13 overs and Jamie Roberts and Cecil Pitcher chipped in with two wickets apiece.

George O'Brien (26) and Ken O'Connor (25) were top scorers for St. David's before Rowan Ramotar wrapped up the innings with three for none in seven balls. Michael Campbell took two for 54.

A second-wicket stand of 88 between Gary Knight and Chris Fleming provided the platform for Leg Trappers' 170, Knight hitting three fours and three sixes in his 58 and Fleming two fours and a six in his 49.

Larry Allen enjoyed his second successive five-wicket haul, snapping up five for 61 from 13 overs, while Cory Smith weighed in with four for 36 from 12.

Only skipper Derek Smith, who slammed four sixes and a four in his 54, coped with the Trappers attack, spearheaded by Colin Scaife (three for 22), Damion Henderson (three for 26) and David Hosier (two for 26), as they slid to 117 all out in the 35th over.

Manders had his pads on waiting to make his debut for North Village but torrential rain for 45 minutes forced the captains to call off the match with Village, having been sent in by West Indian Association, 37 for two in 18.3 overs, Stan Francis and Randy Liverpool taking a wicket each. Mike Young was 22 not out.
