But rather than skimming over the crest of ocean waves the reigning Coronation Cup-winning skipper was gliding over a flatbed of ice in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
The sport is ice sailing and is one which Watlington has become `addicted' to since being introduced to it by rival local sailor Glenn Astwood and New Jersey sailmaker and North American ice sailing champion Henry Bossett.
"Glenn Astwood mentioned it to me before and then I spoke to Henry and he told me a bit more about the sport,'' said Watlington. "I was intrigued by them and there is a real speed sensation involved.
"They're (boats) so fast it's amazing...they call them `flying coffins'.'' The picture has Watlington laying flat on his back aboard one of these sail-driven speed demons racing over the course along with a field of over 40 boats.
"It surprised me,'' said Watlington of his picture being featured. "I'm a nobody (in the sport) and they put me on the cover of this magazine.'' Watlington last month had taken what has become an annual trek to the midwest to race in various competitions with the best North America and the world has to offer in this fledgling sport.
Speeds upward of 50 miles per hour are often reached in these crafts usually measuring around 14 feet in length and the width of one's body.
Watlington did well to finish 27th and 26th in the three race World Championships and seven race North American Championships.
