100 schoolchildren gathered at Clearwater Beach in St. David's for the annual Gibbons Company Iron Kids triathlon.

As race director Charlie Duffy pointed out to competitors before the start, the accent wasn't on winning but having fun.

But judging from these photos by The Royal Gazette's David Skinner, a competitive spirit prevailed.

RELIEF -- Chris Conway cools down at the end of the race, after finishing second overall.

FOLLOW THE LEADER -- Ashley Kirpatrick (right) keeps close tabs on Melissa DeSilva during the cycling. Kirkpatrick won the girls' 12 division with DeSilva second.

THIRST QUENCHER -- Mark Morrison, fourth overall and later the draw prize winner of a new bicycle, takes a much-needed drink at the end of the race.

LOOKING GOOD -- Raishun Burch, first among eight-year-old boys, forges ahead as he moves out on the cycling course. In a field of 44, Burch finished seventh in the 7-10 age division.
