Last year saw 174 youngsters compete in the swim-cycle-run event and spokesperson Greg Hopkins said yesterday he was anticipating over 200 this time around.

Piquing interest in the sport have been a series of triathlon clinics put on by the Bermuda Triathlon Association specifically for the youngsters.

An added incentive is also being provided for this weekend's event, with 10 competitors to be chosen to travel overseas for a top event in Chicago later this year.

Several previous winners are expected back, although many will be competing in different age groups.

The Iron Kids Triathlon is open to children from aged seven to 14 and the deadline for registration is 5 p.m. today, with forms to be delivered to Gibbons Company's children's department along with a fee of $8.
