Jamaica shine in four-star show
In a performance that sent a strong signal to Bermuda that they will be tough opponents in tomorrow night's showdown, Jamaica last night mesmerised Barbados with a superb display of soccer en route to their second straight triumph in the Under-17 World Cup qualifying tournament at the National Stadium.
Now the stage is set for Jamaica-Bermuda match-up which promises to be a dream of a battle if both teams play to their full potential.
Jamaica steamrolled to victory over Barbados with first-half goals by Richard West and Vivian Malcolm followed by additional goals in the second half from Copeland Lewis and Jermaine Montaque. And Lewis also missed a penalty.
Barbados' performance had to be bitterly disappointing to the coaches who watched as their team achieved little against Jamaica after having more moments of success in their 3-0 defeat by Bermuda on Monday. At least Barbados had a few scoring chances against Bermuda, but they found the Jamaica defence stingy -- refusing to allow any more than one clear-cut chance throughout the entire game.
Spurred on by scintillating performances by midfielders Leon Williams, Akeem Priestley and Conrad Hunt and right full-back Cory Pickersgill, Jamaica dominated play throughout and could have won by an even more convincing margin.
West put them ahead after 17 minutes, scoring from 14 yards after a fine build-up down the left flank that finished with a ball being crossed into his path.
Jamaica went 2-0 up after 35 minutes when Malcolm scored from close in after Demar Stewart smartly headed a ball down to his feet. Barbados caused the defence some anxiety after 42 minutes when winger Cody Mark crossed from the right but goalkeeper Richard McCallum smartly advanced to block a shot by Dwayne Griffith.
When play re-started Jamaica quickly underlined their supremacy by dominating even more and making Barbados look out of their depth.
One-way traffic saw West and Malcolm firing shots inches wide of goal before centre-back Copeland Lewis scored from a free-kick just outside of the penalty box to make it 3-0 after 71 minutes.
Shortly afterwards Nicholas Alleyne fouled Hunt in the box and Lewis put his penalty wide of the left post.
With Barbados already looking depleted their fortunes took another slam when Montague netted from a corner by substitute Marcelino Blackburn a minute from time.
