Janzen replaces Love in Tour Challenge
inaugural Gillette Tour Challenge Championship at Mid Ocean Club and has been replaced by fellow American Lee Janzen.
Organisers were unable to offer a reason for Love's sudden withdrawal last night but were delighted that Janzen, the 1993 US Open champion, had quickly filled the void.
"I think we've got an excellent replacement,'' commented tournament spokesman Eric Kraus. "From an American perspective, Lee provided one of the brighter spots at last week's Ryder Cup.'' The 33-year-old Janzen won two of his three matches as the Americans were beaten by Europe at Valderrama in Spain, in stark contrast to Love who lost all four matches in which he played.
Love, however, bounced back with a convincing six-shot victory at the PGA Buick Challenge in Georgia yesterday, although it's understood he made his decision to skip the Bermuda event late last week.
All of the 24 players -- eight each from the PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA Tours -- were scheduled to arrive in Bermuda last night, courtesy of a private plane laid on by the organisers.
That plane left Atlanta soon after the finish of the Buick Challenge, having earlier picked up players from the LPGA Tour stop in Pennsylvania and the Senior Tour event in North Carolina.
At the latter, Bermuda-bound Hale Irwin notched his eighth Senior Tour victory of the season, winning the Vantage Championship by one shot. Also arriving on a high was Sweden's Annika Sorenstam who triumphed at yesterday's LPGA Betsy King Classic.
Joining Janzen, Irwin and Sorenstam on yesterday's flight were Nick Price, Mark Brooks, John Cook, Fred Couples, Scott Hoch, Craig Stadler and Payne Stewart from the PGA Tour, Lee Trevino, Walter Morgan, Jim Colbert, Graham Marsh, Gil Morgan, Bob Murphy and Jay Sigel from the Senior Tour and Nancy Lopez, Karrie Webb, Chris Johnson, Sally Little, Michell McGann, Barb Mucha and Kelly Robbins from the LPGA.
All the players, along with US Open tennis champion Patrick Rafter, who owns a home in Bermuda, will take part in a Pro-Am at Mid Ocean, starting at 12.00 noon today.
The main event, carrying a purse of $1.8 million, is scheduled to get underway at 8.00 a.m. tomorrow with groups of three teeing off at 12 minute intervals.
A blind draw which will determine which players from the three tours partner each other is scheduled for 8.00 this evening. Tickets for tomorrow's Challenge are still on sale at $25 each.
