John Goings and Brian Leo defeated Dan Voth and Wesley Toavs 12-10, 11-9 to win Saturday's Henry VIII Doubles Volleyball Tournament at Shelly Bay field.
The pair, who have established themselves as the best men's doubles volleyball team in Bermuda, have suffered only one loss in four tournaments, and that was because of cramp suffered after a gruelling two-hour semifinal match.
However, this could be the last tournament in which the pair will play together as Leo is set to graduate from Chaffee High and will be going away to study at the University of Florida.
The top seeds had little difficulty in advancing to the finals on Saturday as Goings and Leo defeated Dave Cruickshank and Scott Suddaby 11-3, 11-6 in their semifinal, and Voth and Toavs dispensed with Vince Wheatley and Robert O'Conner 11-4, 11-2.
The final was another classic encounter between the top teams -- the lead changing hands several times in the first game before Goings and Leo claimed victory.
Voth and Toavs leapt to a quick 9-3 lead in the second game, but Goings and Leo completed the match with three service winners and eight unanswered points to establish their superiority.
In the women's division, newcomers Lisa DeSilva and Wenda Godfrey, playing in their second doubles tournament, advanced to the finals after defeating the number one seeds Cindy Hamilton and Elisa Stubbs two straight games during pool play.
Again coming up against Hamilton and Stubbs in the final, DeSilva and Godfrey continued their winning streak by taking the first game 11-8. However, the number one seeds bounced back to clinch the match by winning the second and third games 11-4 and 11-7.
The final tournament of the season -- The Sports `R' Us Co-Ed Doubles -- is scheduled for May 30 at Shelly Bay field. The entry deadline is May 27.
Wesley Toavs would like to set up a junior division and is hoping to get enough teams to get things going next season. SAILING SLG Back-to-back victories by Penny Simmons last weekend have given him a big lead in the David Crampton IOD Series.
Simmons is closely followed by Jordy Walker who enjoyed two second-place finishes on Saturday.
Larry Davis and Martin Siese share third place overall, each with a third and a fourth place to their credit.
Things are tight after four races in the Madras Cup Series for Etchells, with Tim Patton holding the narrowest of leads over Adam Barboza and Buddy Rego.
Those three are well out in front of the rest of the fleet.
Rob Gibson is the front-runner in the J24 W.P. Cook Series, with Trevor Boyce second and Michael Emery third.
Kate Williams pulled herself up into fourth with a race victory on Saturday.
The Indian Harbour Luders Series sees David Moore setting the pace, with Mark Rowe taking close order in second.
The battle for third has James Stewart just edging out David Summers, Dan Bucher and Evan Smith.
