Kavin out front in season opener

tough Warwick dunes course on Saturday with Kavin Smith and Jennifer Fisher predictably taking men's and ladies honours respectively. Smith, fresh back from an extended training stint in the UK, even won the men's race over an approximate six miles after he and a handful of the leaders were directed the wrong way by a marshal and ended up running an extra quarter of a mile. Smith won comfortably in 37 minutes and 45 seconds over a slightly different course than has been used in recent years, over mostly sand and trails. Errol Cormack, like Smith a May 24 Derby champion and now on the comeback after injury, took second place in 38.18 and surprisingly Dyrone Minors, better known as a triathlete, grabbed third in 39.34, 12 seconds ahead of Tracy Wright.

Jamal Hart (40.02), Rory Gorman (40.03), Paul Edness (40.04) Vernon Tankard (40.28), Colin Swan (40.36) and Calvin Steede (41.04) rounded out the top 10 in a field which numbered almost 40, of whom several dropped out.

First master (over 40) and 11th overall was Harry Patchett (41.10). Fisher, meanwhile, won the ladies race over approximately three miles, finishing in 20.56, just 13 seconds ahead of Anna Eatherley who continues to get back to her best form after giving birth to her first baby last year.

And Penelope Butterfield also showed promising form as she took third place in 22.52 ahead of Maria Payne (23.07) and Melanie Claude (23.33).

In the secondary schoolboys division, also over three miles, Kris Hedges ran away to win in 21.12 ahead of Calvert Lee (21.31) and Joel Duffy (21.45).

Jennifer Young (13.01) easily led the secondary schoolgirls over 1.75 miles, ahead of Gabrielle Butler (18.30) and Nicola Mello (18.57).

Primary schoolboy honours went to Ryan Swan who completed the one and a half mile course in a quick 9.24, well ahead of Matthew Trott (13.58) and Gavin Manders (14.15), while Mylinda Johnson led the primary girls in 15.00 minutes, one minute clear of Shelina Roberts (16.00) with Ashley Roberts in third place (16.30).

On Saturday the senior and junior cross-country series continues with an event organised by Mid Atlantic Athletic Club at Astwood Park (9.00 a.m.).
