Kim and Chris do battle at junior worlds

Championships in San Diego, California gave creditable performances in Tuesday's opening round.

Kim Marshall turned in the best score of the two at the city's Torrey Pines North Course with a three-over-par 77 to finish the day in fifth place in the girl's 15-17 year-old division, three strokes behind joint leaders Betty Chen of America and Peru's Erika Hayashida.

Chris Garland, playing in the boys 15-17 year-old division on the par-72 Torrey Pines South Course, shot back-to-back, six-over-par 80s in the first two rounds. American Tiger Woods is the runaway leader of the division after two rounds of 68.

The tournament is one of the more popular events for youngsters in the United States. This year it has attracted a record 238 entries in the girls division and 577 in the boys.

There are 122 in Marshall's age group and 248 in Garland's. The tournament concludes tomorrow.
