in an unexpected way during Sunday's racing in Mangrove Bay.

While the Laser fleet was supposed to race alongside the Bytes, only its top two sailors -- Christian Luthi and Brett Wright -- who have just returned from the Worlds in Mexico, turned up.

So both Wright and Luthi jumped into a pair of Bytes and provided an afternoon of exciting racing, pushing the top Byte racers to their limits in steady 15 knot winds.

At the end of the series, Luthi and Wright finished on top with 81 points, taking first and second spots respectively, followed by Lawson Williams and Ben Wicks.

Luthi and Wright grabbed two first place finishes while Williams and Wicks each had one apiece.

BOCA RACING SLG BOCA RACING There was also plenty of excitement in Sunday's Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association's Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club regatta which began off the Flag Pole in Hamilton Harbour.

The seven-boat IMS class had the race committee ducking for cover with Penny Simmons on High Energy attempting a start at the favoured committee boat end only to be edged out by Alphida-Starr and Defiant , forcing Simmons to do a quick turn by the stern of the committee boat.

Almost simultaneously John Thompson, helming Monkeyshines , held his course close to the committee boat's stern, forcing Buddy Rego's Tsunami into a turn by the port side of the committee boat.

With winds from the south shifting to south-east at 15 to 20 knots, both the spinnaker and non-spinnaker fleets were set courses around the Great Sound.

After finding a clear passage at the start, Kirk Cooper's Alphida-Starr quickly pulled away from the rest of the fleet. The remaining boats stayed together until Two Rock Passage when a procession gradually formed, headed by Monkeyshines .

Her lead over the rest of the fleet remained about two minutes.

Tsunami and High Energy provided entertainment as they match-raced to the finish with Tsunami staying ahead throughout and crossing the finish line 10 seconds ahead of her rival.

Four boats entered the PHRF cruising class, including the relative newcomer Premier Cru . But it was David Roblin's hardworking crew who earned a first place finish on Lullaby .

Claude Guay took Temptation to second place while Ardara earned Paul Watson a third place finish.

Brett Wright: swapped his Laser for a Byte dinghy.
