Laura stuns favourite to claim Canadian crown
Teenager Laura Robinson recorded her second straight overseas tournament triumph yesterday in winning the girls division of the Canadian Junior Golf Championships at Woodbine Country Club, just outside Toronto.
Robinson, the sixth seed entering the match play phase, planted an exclamation mark upon her tour of the land of the maple leaf with a stunning three and one defeat of favourite Jaclyn Sanders.
After struggling through both strokeplay rounds early in the week and barely making the cut, Robinson, who carries a nine handicap, blossomed under the head-to-head format.
Counted among her victims were Ashleigh Korsack, whom she downed one-up at the quarter-final stage, and Ashley Bickerton, an eight and six loser to the Bermudian in the semi-finals.
Still, 18-year-old Ontario native Sanders posed the most serious challenge, but Robinson held firm against the pressure of taking on her respected foe.
As the match unfurled it was the Canadian taking first swipe, moving to a two hole lead after six. However, from there it was all Robinson, as she overhauled her rival, winning the next three holes in making the turn one-up.
After halving 10 and 11, Robinson took 12 and 13 as Sanders' aggression proved her nemesis. She finally conceded defeat at the par four 17th after landing her approach in the water and watching Robinson pitch her second to within eight feet of the cup.
"She played solid golf and putted absolutely fantastic,'' said Laura's father Eric, one of two chaperones for the 12-member Bermuda contingent. "She's delighted, absolutely over the moon right now.
"It's a wonderful achievement for her to win the Canadian Championships, after she won the Ontario Open last week. So it's been a great venture for us with two victories back to back.
"She was absolutely rock solid.'' Bermuda's Fraser Hunt was not so fortunate in his attempt at wresting the boys 15-16 division, but performed admirably during his two down defeat to Nicholas Lafleche of Quebec in the final.
The pair battled tooth and nail throughout what was an exhilarating match to watch, with much ebb and flow.
They departed the 16th green all square. However, Lafleche holed a pressure birdie putt on 17 to take the penultimate hole and gain the advantage heading to the hazard laden 18th.
While the norm had been to make it to the 18th green in three, Hunt was forced to try for it in two, coming up short and landing in the `drink' protecting the putting surface.
"He played some good golf...they both did,'' said Robinson. "He should feel no shame after the way he performed today. Fraser is a three handicapper and Lafleche a one and they were a treat to watch. Both can hold their heads up high.'' Laura Robinson: victory in yesterday's final of the Canadian Junior Golf Championships.
