Leaders Police looking for revenge against Bay

game tour, local cricket interest this weekend focuses on the Premier Division as early leaders Police attempt to hold off a challenge by defending champions Bailey's Bay in what appears to be the top match of the day.

Haunted by memories of their shock one-run defeat to Bay at Sea Breeze Oval last summer when they looked certain to win the game, Police will be anxious to avoid a similar slip-up.

Recounting that setback their top batsman so far this season, opener Wayne Clarke said yesterday that losing three wickets in four deliveries with just three runs needed to win led Police to a defeat that has been difficult to forget.

Now Police are serious about exacting their revenge.

"It's hard to forget that setback. All I can say is that we are taking this game very seriously. That loss to Baywas like suffering a broken heart from a love affair,'' said Clarke.

The team's vice captain Dennis Archer, who has scored just two runs in two matches this season, believes Police have to show more consistency if they aim to hang on to the top spot.

Even though Bay are missing some regular players through suspension, Archer expects them to put up a fight.

"Our problem is that we cannot let things slip as we have in recent seasons.

That last game against Bay was just one example. We just need to play the game the way it should be played,'' added Archer.

"We are on top of the table now, but usually we start off that way anyway.

The important thing is that we be consistent and not throw matches away.'' Clark, a burly hard-hitting opener, is one of the reasons Police head the table. His undefeated 100 against St. David's is the team's top score so far and he has also had solid knocks of 81 against Flatts and 49 against Warwick.

He indicated his early season form should be attributed to a pre-season commitment to get into top physical shape.

"This is one of my best starts to the season. I played no more than four matches last season because I was out of the Island most of the time, but I got myself prepared for this season by doing a lot of weightlifting and other gym work to ensure that I would be fit,'' he said.

Often used as a middle to lower order batsman in the past, Clarke rallied behind the decision by skipper Stevie Lightbourne to use him as an opener and the move has provided the team with big dividends.

Clarke and his skipper put on a second wicket stand of 157 in the draw against Flatts on April 30 which is the best partnership of the season for the team.

While the match-up between the two undefeated teams will be the feature game of the day, the only other unbeaten team Willow Cuts have two games to play this weekend.

They meet Somerset Bridge at White Hill today and tomorrow travel to Wellington Oval to take on Southampton Rangers.

However, another interesting game should be at Sea Breeze Oval where Cleveland entertain Western Stars.

The remaining schedule: Devonshire Rec. v St. George's, Devonshire; St.

David's v Somerset, Lord's; Flatts v Social Club, Nationals; Warwick v Nationals, Southampton Oval; PHC v Somerset Bridge, White Hill.
