Let's get tougher -- Darrell

Darrell left Jamaica yesterday satisfied with a victory and a draw, but concerned over how his team were "manhandled'' in the first half of both games.

Although Bermuda were able to sort out many problems in their own game, Darrell said that emphasis must still be placed on "toughening up'' players for the forthcoming home-and-away World Cup preliminary round tie against Haiti.

"My one concern here was the way we were manhandled, we were simply too easily dispossessed,'' said Darrell. "It could be because Jamaica play more at an international level that they play tougher, at lot of their tactics at home (Bermuda) will be called fouls for sure.'' Darrell added: "We just can't allow them to physically push us off the ball -- not if we are to have any success at the international level.'' Overall, Darrell felt Bermuda did well on the short tour admitting he would have liked them to have been more consistent throughout instead of coming alive in the second half of both games.

"After 60 minutes they began to come into the game. Our midfield complained they were not getting the ball often enough because the defence was bypassing them and trying to distribute directly to the forwards,'' said Darrell.

"Kenny Thompson got things rollging in the middle. We knew midfield would be a main concern and it still is.'' The defence was sharp with centre-halves Leroy Stevens and Shawn Smith as steady as ever. Kevin Grant is at home at right-back while Voorhees Astwood was more than a pleasant surprise at left-back. Dependable Dwayne Adams has the goalkeeping job for as long as he wants it, it appears.

"If I had to decide between Voorhees and Albert Caisey right now it would be a difficult choice,'' said Darrell. It looks as though two of the three professionals who did not make the trip will walk straight into the team for the Haiti match in Bermuda on April 26.

Rotherham's Shawn Goater, who was again on the mark on Saturday in a vital 2-0 win over fellow Fourth Division promotion hopefuls Rochdale, will no doubt lead the attack alongside PHC's Kyle Lightbourne while Hereford's Kentoine Jennings and Meshach Wade, if fit, will be two of the midfield players.

At this early stage, Thompson has the inside track on the third midfield spot while the fourth will be decided between Elliott Jennings and skipper Albert Smith who missed the Montego Bay game because of the flu.

"It's our first game since Norway in February and we accomplished a lot and got positive results,'' added Darrell. "We were able to do nothing but talk soccer for a week; we were able to plan among ourselves and more importantly we were able to see just where we were as far as our performance was concerned.'' Darrell noted that Kentoine Jennings was the fittest of the Bermuda players as expected and he wanted to see others work on their fitness for Haiti -- or at least show the same fight and determination as Sammy Swan did against Wavers.

The national squad are expected in Bermuda today after overnighting in New York.
