Leverock double a treat for Prospect
Prospect surged into the final of the Shield competition with a 5-1 hammering of a hapless Social Club outfit at PHC last night.
Billed as a toss-up, Prospect turned the match into a one-sided affair as they ruled the tide throughout, scoring two goals in the first half and coming back for three more in the second.
Social Club caved in under relentless pressure from a well drilled home side coached by first year man Vance Brown.
Goals by Anthony Mouchette, Dwayne Leverock (two), Peter Philpott and subsitute Cal Smith more than offset an earlier strike by Social Club's Randy Spence.
The Bluebirds relied on the experience of veterans Larry Darrell and Fred (Pinks) Lewis) -- long since past their prime -- and were made to pay for countless defensive errors which allowed the opposing offense numerous offerings in attacks.
And while the forward trio of Mouchette, Andrew Rollins and Lyndon Fubler did not take advantage of these kind offerings early on, they were able to find their way through the defence late, constantly exposing the weakness of their opposite numbers.
Ironically, the first chance -- one that should have been put away -- fell at the feet of Lewis, who amazingly placed a sidefoot shot over the bar from just five yards following a right-wing cross by Shawn Laws.
Six minutes later they were made to pay for this misgiving when Mouchette blew past his defender and planted an angled shot past a bewildered Wentworth Trott in goal for Social Club.
Social Club came right back to equalise through Randy Spence, as he picked up a seemingly harmless ball from midfield on the left and proceeded to volley first time past Andrew Bissel in goal for Prospect.
Expecting to enter the interval on even terms, Social were rocked by a Leverock header off when he rose unchallenged to connect on a corner by Fubler, placing his header past a maze of players and making the score 2-1.
The second half was all Prospect as they ran rampant over their "burnt-out'' oppnents unable -- or unwilling -- to offer more than token resistance.
Leverock, Philpott and Smith, with a thunderous 20-yard freekick closed out the scoring, giving Prospect a richly deserved berth in the final against the winners of the BAA Vasco match, still to be played.
