Local duo lead clubs in play-off pursuits

The clubs of Bermudian strikers Kyle Lightbourne and Shawn Goater are battling for the remaining spot in the English Second Division play-offs.

The regular season is ending with a mad scramble for the final place, with Goater's Bristol City, who currently occupy the last play-off position, in a position to clinch a spot tomorrow night when they meet Chesterfield.

Chesterfield were eliminated from contention last night when they lost 1-0 at home to Stockport, who clinched the second automatic promotion spot behind Bury.

If Walsall win tonight against Gillingham and City tomorrow night, it would leave Walsall to battle with Crewe for the final spot. Crewe have 72 points with one game left while City have 70 points with two games remaining and Walsall 67 points.

Blackpool, who had their hopes of automatic promotion dashed last season when they lost to Walsall, are again back in contention. They are seventh on 69 points but have just one match remaining and will be eliminated with a City win over Chesterfield.

Walsall, presently eighth, can keep their hopes alive or see them dashed tonight in the first of their two remaining away matches. Walsall close their season on Saturday away to Preston.

Bristol City's final game will be away to Wycombe on Saturday.

"Both teams still have a chance,'' says Lightbourne, who kept his team in the hunt on Saturday with the only goal in the 1-0 win over previous leaders Brentford. The strike, two minutes before the break, was his 25th goal of the season.

City had their weekend match with Plymouth delayed because of crowd congestion as 15,368 crammed into the ground. They came from behind to win 3-1 though Goater failed to add to his 24 goals for the season.

"Shawn's team obviously have the upper hand, they are three points ahead of us and with two games left,'' said Lightbourne. He acknowledges his team will need help from other teams if they are to reach the play-offs.

One of those teams is York, who could help Walsall by beating fifth placed Crewe. If that happens and Walsall win their next two matches then they and City could qualify for the playoffs.

"We threw our chance away last weekend when we lost to Plymouth,'' said Lightbourne. "It was such a vital game for us and they needed to win the game to stay up. On the day we under-performed.'' Considering the way they started the season, and the fact that they haven't spent the kind of money on players like other teams in the division, Lightbourne says it has been an outstanding season for the Saddlers.

"We made a slow start to the season and at one stage were in the bottom three or four,'' he said. "Just before Christmas we went on a good run when we won six or seven in a row.'' "In the second half of the season our away form has been pretty good. Now we've got two tough games. Both teams we play have nothing to play for but those games can be tricky.'' "They are probably going to want to spoil the party for us. We have everything to gain if we win.'' Getting into the play-offs gives any one of the four teams a good shot at the final promotion spot, though those failing to win outright promotion could be jolted psychologically. Last year Bradford clinched the final play-off spot and then got promoted to the First Division.

"It's the team that runs into form at the time that could end up taking it,'' said Lightbourne. He admits Bristol City, one of the best supported teams in the division, have the resources to play at a higher level.
