Luck eludes hosts
Bermuda finished the International Youth Tournament empty-handed -- but they must be wondering how after dominating their consolation final against the US.
It would be no exaggeration to say they could have been three or four up by half-time had their finishing matched some intelligent and skillful approach play.
Coach Mark Trott rotated his personnel again, putting top goalscorer Raymond Beach up front alongside Nasir Wade in a more central striking role. And the partnership seemed to be working as early as the sixth minute when Beach's delightful chip found Wade in space 12 yards out but he skewed his volley wide.
Wade went close again before Beach sidefooted a volley into grateful keeper Christopher Twist's arms as Bermuda upped the pressure, leaving their own keeper Paul Fox, in for Zane Hendrickson, a virtual spectator.
Beach then slammed a low shot against the outside of the post, before prompting a superb move that deserved a goal. He nodded the ball on to Wade, whose back-heel flick back into his path was a delight to witness, but then saw his slightly scuffed shot brilliantly turned over by an almost grounded Twist.
Tarik Jennings, brought on at the interval for the out of sorts Marlon Dill, missed a great chance to break the deadlock as Bermuda began to make use of Brendon Minors' long throws. But the longer the game went on the more a US sucker punch seemed likely.
It came with just nine minutes to go, as Jake Jackson's long shot was pushed up into the air by the under-worked Fox and it fell behind him into the net.
But Beach seemed to have saved the day when he latched on to Ray's neat ball and slotted past Twist with just three minutes remaining.
However, Todd Brown struck back immediately, his dipping shot from distance giving Fox no chance.
