Mariners celebrated winning the Second XV league championship on Saturday, by shutting out defending titlists Teachers 22-0 in a gritty match.

Mariners, which ended Teachers' three-year dominance of the division, scored three second half tries to wrap up the match after leading 5-0 at the interval on a try by centre Alick Roberts.

Prop Ben Burnet opened up the scoring in the second half by chasing down a loose ball from a line-out for a try.

This was followed by a fine solo run by scrum half Bob Colebrook to make the score 15-0 and a George Robinson conversion made it 17-0.

Centre Terry Madeiros added a fourth try to give Mariners the win.

In the second Saturday game, improving Renegades -- who beat Teachers the previous week to assure Mariners the title for the first time since 1990 -- overcame struggling Police 20-12.
