Marshall makes his return
lanky seam bowler Ryan Steede got the nod over Clarkie Trott in the only two Cup Match changes made by champions St. George's.
Like the trial match at Somerset, this one at Wellington Oval was also low scoring with an early finish (4.10).
In the Vice-President's total of 119, Marshall was high man with 33 off 45 balls, including four fours and a six. That was good enough to convince the selectors that the veteran lefthander, whose career began back in 1980 with a memorable century on his debut, was deserving of a recall.
Team: Clay Smith (capt), Herbie Bascome (vice capt), Arnold Manders, Glenn Blakeney, Mark Ray, Charlie Marshall, Lionel Cann, Dean Minors, Gary Brangman, Ryan Steede (colt), Eugene Foggo. Res: Cleon Scotland, Chris Foggo.
"Jason and I are just alternating every other year,'' Marshall joked.
"I told Jason to go fishing this year and enjoy himself and I will make some runs for him because last year he didn't make any runs.'' There was happiness and sadness in the Bailey's Bay camp yesterday after Glenn Blakeney retained his spot with a dashing 56 for the President's XI in their victory chase, and Irving Romaine got the nod at Somerset. But Clarkie Trott, the league's top bowler this season, was overlooked for David Adams' spot.
Trott is the league's leading wicket-taker with 42 dismissals.
Club player Ryan Steede was preferred over Trott to back up the seam attack of Herbie Bascome and Gary Brangman.
Steede, used as first change behind Kenny Phillip and Trott on Saturday, had figures of four for 41 from 11 overs for the President's XI as he removed contender Ricky Hodsoll for 13 after an opening stand of 48 with Dexter Smith (22).
Steede then followed up with the wickets of Mark Ray, Dean Minors and Gary Brangman in the middle order to leave the Vice-President's team in deep trouble at 98-7.
Trott claimed two for 28 from 11 overs and Eugene Foggo two for 10 off seven.
Blakeney, in his first game in six weeks, left no doubts about his form, as he smashed seven fours and two sixes in his 62-ball knock of 56. After losing Jason Anderson when the score was 17, Blakeney dominated a second wicket stand of 67 with Chris Foggo (17) which set up the easy victory.
None of the front line bowlers had any success after Gary Brangman got the first wicket. Adams battled to hold onto his place with two for 18 from five overs but it wasn't enough.
Missing out on selection were batsmen Dexter Smith and Ricky Hodsoll and Cleon Scotland who has failed again to follow his father Rupert into the St.
George's team.
