Mello out in front: IN BRIEF

group after the second day of the 54-hole Can-Am Tournament in Florida, while Chris Smith (16-19 age group) has moved up to third place.

Mello fired a two-over-par 73 on the Greenelefe south course with Smith carding a 78.

Visibility on the first two holes was poor because of fog, with players not able to see more than 100 yards down the fairway. And conditions were made even trickier by the 100 percent humidity, which ensured slow greens on the front nine.

Richard Scott, from Ontario, took over second place behind Mello, leapfrogging over first day leader Nicholas Kenny, this year's Canadian junior champion.

Smith's score tied him with the first day leader, Jonathan Lauzan, who placed second in the Canadian Junior Championships.

Going into the third round today, Smith is three strokes off the pace. Play moves to Grenelefe's west course, used for the 1997 Professional Golf Association's qualifying round.

Medallist Chris Brough will meet Fraser Hunt in the 36-hole final of the Bermuda Junior Matchplay Golf Championships at Riddell's Bay today.

Brough outlasted Ted Terceira to win yesterday's 15-17 age group semi-final two and one while Hunt got past Mark Robinson three and one.

In the 13-14 age division, favourite Aaron James was surprisingly beaten by a determined Jarryd Dillas four and three.

Dillas now meets David Smith in the final after Smith finally disposed of opponent Ryan Marshall on the 19th hole.

In the 12 and under group, favourites Andrew Boyce and Sean Harlingten both lost nailbiters at the first extra play-off hole.

Boyce went down to Jamie MacMillan and Harlingten to Tyler Marshall.

SAILING SLG Bermudians Zan Kirkland and Jesse Kirkland were lying 23rd and 25th overall after the second day of racing in the Orange Bowl International Optimist regatta in Florida.

After the first day Jesse had held down third place with a sixth and first place finish in the fleet of 140. But in light conditions on the second day, the youngster slipped with a 44th, 26th and second.

Zan had started with a fifth and seventh for eighth overall but then posted finishes of 53rd, third and fourth.

Sailors from the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Colombia, Ecuador, Finland and Holland were among the fleet.

The 12-race regatta was scheduled to finish yesterday.
