Mid Ocean Club's 13th Ladies Invitation tournament for the Arton Trophy carries special significance when it begins today^ .^ .^.^50 participating

Teams will be representing four countries -- Bermuda, the United States, Canada and England -- with 1996 Arton Trophy winners Carol Hammond of Bermuda and Janet Olsen of Massachusetts among them. Also competing are the 1995 winners and last year's gross champions, Jean Mylrea and Ginette Spinucci.
Also in the field are Mary Arton and her long-standing partner Gloria Anderson. But regardless of whether they end up in the winners' circle it will still be a special occasion for Arton and her husband as the 50 teams will toast them on their 50th anniversary on Friday.
BASEBALL BAS The YAO (Bermuda) baseball season opens on Saturday at the former USNAS Kindley Field with 21 teams and 270 boys and girls competing in four leagues.
The leagues are T-ball (ages 4-6), Rookie League (7-9), Little League (10-12) and Senior League (12-15).
MARTIAL ARTS MAT Veteran martial artist Skipper Ingham has been featured in a recently published book called "The Black Heroes of the Martial Arts'' by Ron Van Clief. Van Clief was a colleague of Ingham's during his many years living in New York. From A&B Publishers Group in Brooklyn, the book lists Ingham as the promoter of BIG (Bermuda International Grandchampionships) which ran from 1985 to 1988.
SOFTBALL SOF The launching of a minor softball league is being considered by Bermuda Amateur Softball Association, but much will depend on the response they receive from youngsters between the ages of 12 and 16.
