Motocross club homeless, blames Base golf plans
because of plans to develop a golf course.
Currently the Bermuda Autocycle Union uses land at Coney Island, declared a national park in 1988 -- severely limiting their activities.
Along with other sporting groups on the Island, the Union wants to move to the US Naval Annex at Southampton which will be vacated on September 1.
The Union president, Mr. Ras Mykkal, claims other groups have been given the go-ahead to use the land but his organisation has been left out.
"The Government has suggested that we move, but they do not want to give us a place to go.
"We have been told that an area we picked out at the Base, which used to be a dumping area, will not be used, but the Government does not want to put us there. I have been told from three different sources that it will accommodate a golf course and condos.'' Mr. Mykkal added that his club was limited by restrictions placed because the area was a national park. No permanent buildings or fences are allowed and it is holding back the organisation's expansion.
Today, along with the go-kart club, a demonstration will be held at the Base to test noise levels, although Mr. Mykkal believes it will not bother neighbouring residents.
"We would like to see the Government say what they are going to do with the base,'' added Mr. Mykkal.
Last night Management and Technology Minister the Hon. Grant Gibbons said he had had talks with some sporting groups, but denied any decision had been taken about the use of the base.
He said a golf course had been seriously considered, but it was just one of hundreds of proposals and it was premature to comment on any specific plans.
