Nails calls it a day
decided to call it a day.
The former Bermuda and PHC defender, who has struggled with a recurring ankle injury suffered in a Charity Cup match in 1989, now looks like concentrating his efforts on the golf course.
"The ankle injury has definitely put me out of the game, you won't be seeing me out there next season,'' said the 33-year-old Douglas yesterday.
"If it wasn't for the injury I would probably be looking towards playing again, but I am certain that this is the end.'' Douglas' career began to take a noticeable dive back in 1989 when he injured his ankle while playing for PHC during a Charity Cup game against Somerset Trojans at Devonshire Rec. field.
Since then he has had problems trying to shake off the injury, revealing that he played mostly at about 70 percent fit whenever he was able to make an appearance.
"It's been tough. For example last season I only intended to play for a limited period until the youngsters coming along at PHC were available,'' said Douglas. "But injuries to a few of them forced me to carry on for much longer than I anticipated and in the end I not only played the entire first half matches, but I also played in the Dudley Eve (Trophy).'' Douglas, whose last Bermuda appearance was as captain against St. Lucia at National Stadium during the 1989-90 season, said that he had no ambition of finishing his career where he started -- with Second Division Wolves.
He said: "People have always said to me that I should play where my heart is and my response has always been, `That's why I am at PHC'. I told them that I did not want to go backwards.'' DERECK DOUGLAS -- Giving in to ankle injury.
