National Sports Club Rebels suffered their first loss of the season, 3-0 against Wasps, in men's hockey action on Sunday.
In very difficult conditions, due to continuous rain, the first half was scoreless. However, Wasps pressed on towards victory in the second half, opening the scoring after 15 minutes through Ifor Hughes.
The seasoned veteran started the move in his own half and continued his run to find the ball breaking to him at the top of the circle and his first time shot was good enough to beat a Rebels defender on the goal line.
Ten minutes later, a Simon Farrington shot was illegally stopped by a Rebels defender with Albert Steede converting the resulting penalty stroke. The Rebels youngsters continued to battle hard but were dealt a body blow when, in the dying minutes, Burt Rodney scored Wasps' third with a firm shot.
Defending champions, Chameleons, took advantage of Rebels' defeat to move to the top of the league on goal difference with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over the fast improving Upstarts.
A scoreless first half saw Chameleons become increasingly frustrated by the solid play of the Upstarts defence led by Peter Borland and Gordie Veal. In fact, the closest either side came to a goal in the first half was when Neville Bilimora put a shot from the top of the circle narrowly wide of the Chameleons goal.
The second half continued in much the same manner with Upstarts content to soak up pressure and use the speed of Roger Cash up front on the counter-attack.
The deadlock was eventually broken with 15 minutes remaining when Alastair Younie weaved his way into the Upstarts circle on the right and slipped the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Younie repeated the feat, this time from the left side.
It was a very encouraging performance from an Upstarts' side featuring quite a few Canadian ball-hockey players who are adapting to the different rules of field hockey very quickly.
DARTS DRT Onions earned bragging rights for the next year as the annual match pitting them against the Limeys witnessed the local bunch produce an 8-3 mauling of their opponents.
After Limeys got off to a promising start, with Simon Carruthers defeating Donald Johnson 2-0, the walls collapsed as Onions stormed back by seizing the next five games.
Kevin Brown briefly halted the slide in downing Frankie Brewster of Onions in the seventh fixture, but Limeys would lose three of the last four to complete a day of misery for the expats.
Capturing the West End Dart League most valuable player trophy was Vernon Daniels for his thrilling 2-1 triumph over Limeys' Lee Harrison. Daniels shot legs of 20 and 19 along with four tons on his way to victory in a game in which he once trailed 1-0.
