Netball

won the Bermuda Netball Association's First Division title on Saturday with a 43-34 victory over second-placed Netts at Bernard Park.

DeShields finished with 29 points and Smith 14 while the spirited challenge made by Netts was led by Carolyn Binns who scored 23 points and Kim Minors who contributed 11.

AICO completed the season with 22 points from 12 matches while Netts followed with 20 points from 12 matches. Coca-Cola were third well off the pace, edging out PCC by goal difference.

Olympic Panthers scored a surprise 36-19 victory over PCC with Kelly Trott scoring 22 points and Dawn Simons 132. Rose Richardson had 14 and Sheena Maybury five for the losers.

The other game saw Coca-Cola defeat North Village 35-28.

In the Second Division Netts Whites finished well on top with 28 points from 14 matches with Olympic Panthers holding down second by goal difference with 17 points.

Sunday's results of play in the Second Division knockout were as follows: PCC 15, Olympic Panthers 11; Netts Whites 25, Netts Greens 15; AICO 25, Wolves 23 (but Wolves advance because AICO failed to provide a referee); Warwick Redbirds d Boulevard by default.

ROAD RUNNING RUN Some of the top runners in the Island are expected out on Sunday to participate in the February Freeze 10-K benefit run at the US Naval Air Station starting at 10 a.m.

The race will begin at the Clearwater Beach snack shack and proceed by a set course to the Number One Gate where the runners will turn around and finish at the entrance to the NASA Tracking Station.

Entry forms are available at the Sportseller, Pro Shop and at the NAS Fire Department.

All proceeds will help to establish an academic scholarship, which will be awarded to a selected Chaffee high school student.

However, there will be no fun about the run next week when the Somerset Police Recreation Club holds its annual Five Flat Miles race at the west end starting at 9.30 a.m.

Entries for this race can now be collected at the Sportseller, New Winners Edge and Somerset Police Station. The deadline for entries is Friday, March 5, at 4 p.m.

GOLF GLF Bermuda's George Hammond and American Charles Brennan are the second-round leaders of the Founder's Trophy tournament after carding a 65 on Tuesday at Mid Ocean Club. Their total after two rounds is 130.

Two teams are guaranteed to offer the leaders serious challenges today and Friday when tournament play resumes. Bermuda's Jim Mylrea and American Ted Kenerson carded an impressive 63 in Saturday's opening round and a 69 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 132. Americans Edward and Thomas Ryan fired a 64 on Saturday and 69 on Tuesday and are three strokes behind the leaders with a two-round total of 133.

Also solidly in the running for the tournament lead and holding down third place, four strokes behind Hammond and Brennan, include E. McLaughlin of Bermuda and Donald Bauer of United States and two other American teams, Herb Kloock and Robert Shields and George Stevens and Bruce Beagley.

The race is tight in the gross division with Americans Thomas Wall and James Taylor carding 145 after two rounds. In second place, one stroke behind, are Americans Dick Stimets and Richard Weller.

BOWLING BOW Stanley Ray had a men's second high series of 588 and second high game of 256 to lead Warwick Whites to a 16-11 victory over Mini Forwarders in recent action in the Mott's Sportsmen's Bowling League.

Team-mate Hilton Hayward had a fine night also for Warwick Whites contributing a third high series of 576 and third high game of 236. Chris Leverock led the losers with a 631 high series while Casey Burgess had a 235 game.

Social Club beat Young Blood 19-8 with Ty Williams roling a high game of 266.

In other games Sparks beat Warwick Reds 14-13 and Buy and Sell beat Pembroke Juniors 15-12.

Saturday's schedule: Sparks v Warwick Whites, Mini Forwarders v Warwick Reds, Buy and Sell v Young Blood, Social Club v Pembroke Juniors.

Kevin Minors had a men's high series of 564 and third high game of 194 to lead Dolphins to a 4-0 win over B's and G's in recent Mixed Majors Bowling League action.

Howard Francis had a 536 second high series and Kevin Burt had a 199 men's high game as Untouchables romped over Troublemakers 4-0. Burt also had a third high series of 528 while team-mate Charletta Samuels had a women's second high series of 545 and Vivian Griffiths had a women's third game of 200.

Other results saw D&D Rollers beat Last Minutes 3-1 and Mix-Ups and Strikes draw 2-2.

DARTS DRT Action in the Bermuda Darts Association on Monday will see Jimmy Pratt and Elizabeth Simons defending their mixed doubles title at Spanish Point starting at 8.30 p.m.

All players involved in the competition are asked to report for an early registration.

The Champion of Champions competition will be played at Nationals on March 8 at 8 p.m. with Charles Roberts defending his title. The rules call for one player only being allowed to represent a team.
