New event for junior triathletes
Series, with the addition of the Junior Ultra Sprint Team Duathlon.
The competition introduces junior teams of two, a runner and a cyclist, competing over similar distances as those set for the individual junior duathlon -- 1 -mile run, 21 -mile cycle, 1 -mile run for 7-10 year olds; one-mile run, five-mile cycle, one-mile run for 11-14 year olds.
"The addition of the Junior Sprint Team Duathlon encourages our young athletes to get involved in the sport and provides them with a positive venue to channel their energies and develop their team skills,'' said Karen Madeiros, event and promotions officer at the Bank of Bermuda.
"Providing race venues for participation of all ages allows all athletes, particularly the juniors to aspire to higher levels of competition,'' she said.
While spectators will have to wait until next week to witness the newest category unfurl, Sunday will see the juniors take the spotlight alongside the adults while battling for individual honours. Racing starts at 8.30 a.m. from Albouy's Point.
Jim Butterfield, president of the Bermuda Triathlon Association, took time to thank the bank for its continued support of the event.
"This is the biggest event on our triathlon calendar and we are pleased that Bank of Bermuda is supporting the sport of triathlon once again this year,'' said Butterfield, a true pioneer of the sport locally.
