New racquet helps Brown lift title

the men's 55 singles final of the BLTC Invitational tennis tournament yesterday, coming from behind to defeat fellow countryman Al Rogers 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Brown's new racquet, only recently approved for tournament play by the United States Tennis Association, was the talk of the day at Coral Beach, and many in the large crowd that watched yesterday's final might have wondered about its supposed advantages as Brown lost the first set in less than 20 minutes.

But in match that went on for more than two hours, he recovered well to lift the title.

In another final yesterday, unseeded American Sylvia Conragan from Massachussetts, defeated the second seed Marge Grottscho 6-0, 6-3, to take the women's 50 singles crown.

Dick Mount won the men's 55 title 5-7, 6-0, 3-0 when his opponent, and doubles partner, Wally Stimpson had to retire after pulling a hamstring.

Arguably the day's highlight was the men's doubles open semi-final in which unseeded Mark Ward and Jerome Bradshaw toppled top seeds Mike Curry and John Moore 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

They now face Stuart Smith and Reto Krauer in today's final.

A total of seven finals will be played today, the first at 10.00 this morning between Kelly Holland and Kim Simmons for the ladies open singles title.

Tomorrow sees the first matches in the Coral Beach Club Invitation Tournament in which many of those overseas players who have competed this week will take part.
