Norm's Storms win squash final thriller
BPSA Simbas to win the final of the Colonial Squash Team League.
The match was the culmination of three months of Sunday afternoon league play during which 28 teams involving more than 100 players contested the inaugural Colonial Team trophy.
Sunday's match enjoyed a fitting finale as, with the score tied 1-1, Furtado and his Simbas' opponent Tony Prentice battled in an epic decider.
Despite clinching the first game 15-13, Furtado found himself two games to one down before snatching the fourth 15-10 to draw level.
The final game was a seesaw affair with neither player able to draw clear and with the game tied at 14-14, Furtado pulled off a fine backhand volley which completely wrong-footed his weary opponent. Final score was 15-14, 9-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-14.
It was the second match in the final to go down to 14-all in the fifth.
Earlier Lynne Furtado of Norm's Storms clawed her way back against a stronger but less mobile Naz Jetha only to lose on the final point. The score: 15-13, 12-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-14.
Tim Counsell of Norm's Storms outran David Woodward to win 3-1 in the other match.
In the third place play-off, Strokers beat Untouchables 2-1. Phil Spencer and Michael Swain scored straight set wins over Kim Carter and John Kelly while Lily Khaw lost to Malcolm Towlson.
In the semi-finals, Norm's Storms beat Strokers 2-1 while Simbas got past Untouchables 2-1.
