Now ICC players prepare for India
in just a couple of matches before the India Test team arrive here for two one-day games on May 8 and 10.
With little time for others to stake a claim for places in the squad, the bulk of the players who represented Bermuda in the recent ICC Tournament in Malaysia are expected to be retained for the two matches at Somerset and St.
David's.
However, the revised domestic league schedule means that there will only be one or two chances for local players to hit form before the Indians' arrival.
India's rain-affected Test series with the West Indies ended yesterday with the fourth draw in five matches. This weekend they begin their one-day series with the first two of the four-match series in Trinidad on Saturday and Sunday.
Locally, the season begins this weekend, a week later than originally planned, with the Open matches in both the Premier and First Divisions. The First Division also play a round of matches on Saturday.
On Sunday there will be four matches in the Premier Division, with champions Western Stars playing at home to St. David's at St. John's Field. St. George's host last season's First Division champions Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval while the other promoted team, PHC, meet Bailey's Bay at White Hill Field and Willow Cuts play Police at Somerset.
Just four Premier Division teams will be in action the following weekend when the top four in last season's standings -- Stars, Bailey's Bay, St. George's and Willow Cuts -- battle in the Camel Cup.
The semi-finals will be held on Saturday, May 3 when Stars play Bay and St.
George's clash with Willow Cuts, with the final taking place the following day at St. David's.
Open competition will dominate the early weeks of the new season in both the Premier and First Divisions with the next limited overs play not coming until May 24 when the first round of the Knockout Cup is staged.
It will be a busy 1997 season for local cricketers, with the International Youth Tournament being staged here for a second time -- the first since 1985 when Bermuda last won it.
The tournament, involving under-19 teams from Bermuda, England, Scotland, Denmark, Ireland, Canada and Holland, will run from Sunday, July 6 to Sunday, July 13.
Lewis Foggo scored 60 not out and Jason Lewis 25 as St. George's beat Cleveland by six wickets in a practice match on Sunday at Wellington Oval.
Scores: Cleveland 131 (37.3 overs), St. George's 133-4 (27 overs).
The match was a 40-overs a side contest with Cleveland sent in on a wicket of uneven bounce. Both teams were missing several first team regulars, with Cleveland in early trouble, losing their first three wickets for only 23.
Curtis Jackson, Aaron Adams, Carlton Smith and Al Talbot all went cheaply at the top of the order before number five batsman, James McKirdy (16) and Anthony Bascome (21) led a middle order recovery. They added 36 for the sixth wicket before Andre Smith (12) and Troy Harvey (14) offered some resistance after the stand was broken on 96.
Herbie Bascome and Gregg Foggo led the St.George's bowling with three for 17 and 23 respectively.
After Eugene Foggo, Sinclair Gibbons and Ryan Steede failed to reach double figures for St. George's, leaving them 23-3, a fourth wicket stand of 78 between Lewis and Foggo turned the match around. Lewis hit four fours while Foggo hit eight fours and three sixes. Gregg Foggo finished with 11 not out.
