On the final day of competition in the Harbour Open Championships at the BASA pool, one all-comers and two age group records were broken.

Some 70 overseas and 110 local swimmers entered for the 70 events in the 18th annual championship three-day meet.

Eight-year-old Darryl Steynor of Sharks Swim Club set a new age group record in the boys eight and under 25 metre butterfly event, his time of 18.63 beating the previous mark set by Jack Negro of Harbour Club in 1986 by half a second.

Matthew Hammond of Harbour Club continued his fine form by setting a new age group record in the boys 11 and 12 years 100 metre freestyle. Hammond broke Harbour teammate Stephen Fahy's record set in 1990 by 99-100ths of a second.

The new record is one minute, 72-100ths of a second.

A new all-comers record was set by 21-year-old Geoffrey Wilcox who swims for the University of Maryland and coaches the Adelphi Swim Club. Wilcox is the first swimmer in Bermuda to break one minute in the 100 metre backstroke event, his record standing at 59:06 seconds. GOLF GLF Hav Trott, one of Bermuda's top golfers, recently returned home after residing in England and has immediately set his seal on competitive golf as he shot a two-under-par 68 to lead the field in the BGA Medal Play Competition at Ocean View on Saturday.

It is anticipated that Trott will be seeking a place in Bermuda's team to compete in the Eisenhower Cup in France next year.

Tied for second place on one-under-par 71 were John Richardson and Tony Readwin while Denton Outerbridge took fourth spot with a 72.

Outerbridge's wife, Judithanne, continued her winning ways as she led the small field of six women with an 82. Pat Morgan was second on 85 and Glenda Todd third on 89.

Next Saturday will see the Romay inter-parish tournament played over the Belmont course with an 8.15 shotgun start. St. George's South will be defending the title they won in 1992.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda Open information brochure and entry forms will be available at the pro shop at all golf clubs by mid-week. The event takes place from October 14-17 and last year many locals were disappointed by entering too late so are advised to enter early.

Forms and entry fees should be mailed to the BGA secretary at P.O. Box HM 433, Hamilton, HMBX. Cut-off is on October 7. Entries by telephone will not be accepted.

CHESS CHS Richard Farleigh clinched the 1993 Canada Dry tournament when he defeated main challenger Richard Black in the "clash-of-giants'' last week.

Time was the chief enemy for Black, who ran out of it trying to defend against an onslaught by Farleigh's un-castled king.

The interest now switches to the struggle for class prizes. George Ben and Noel Trott, both with two points thus far, are in contention for Class B honours, while Frank Ming and David Arorash, on three points, lead Class C.

Last week's results: Richard Farleigh 1, Richard Black 0; David Arorash 1, Carlton Williams 0; Noel Trott 1, Donald Dillas 0; Nigel Chudleigh, Brian Stephenson, Frank Ming and Shimon Alkon all won by default.

Tonight's pairings: Stephenson (31 ) v Farleigh (5); Black (3) v Chudleigh (4); Ben (2) v Ming (3); Alkon (2) v Trott (2); Williams (2) v Simmons (11 ); Dillas (11 ) v Arorash (3).
