Open, Overs titles to be decided
league titles can be wrapped up.
The championships in the Premier Division Overs league will be decided at Wellington Oval when St. George's entertain Western Stars while the title in the First Division Open league will be determined when Devonshire Rec. host Southampton Rangers at Devonshire Rec.
For skippers Clay Smith of St. George's and Olin Jones of Southampton the situation is a simple one, they must produce top form in order to finish on a triumphant note.
Stars captured the Premier Division Open league title a week ago when they eat Bailey's Bay by six wickets at Sea Breeze Oval and will no doubt be looked at as the supreme team of the season if they are able to win another division race.. .and nobody knows it better than Smith.
"Let's face it there is a lot at stake in this match because the winner may be in a position to claim that they are the best in the island. We still can win two major titles because we are still in the Knockout final against Cleveland,'' said Smith.
St. George's also beat Bay at Sa Breeze Oval recntly, as that victory set the stage for tomorrow's winner-takes-all clash at Wellington Oval, though it is a match that is too close to predict.
The teams have already met twice this season in limited overs, with Stars beating St. George's in the Camel Cup final and St. George's then pulling off victory in the Knockout semi-final.
The St. George's skipper goes into the game after receiving a lot of criticism for his defeat in Cup Match, but he doesn't seem to be too bothered by it and remains focussed primarily on the immediate task ahead.
He makes it clear that there is no real pressure on himself or the team to redeem themselves in this match for any Cup Match failure, indicating that the only way to do this is to win it back next year.
"The only pressure we have it to satisfy our fans who have become accustomed to us winning, they definitely want us to win something this season and it would be nice to get this title,'' said Smith.
While fully aware of the fact that Stars are a solid all-round team, Smith still feels that his team have an edge on their home ground even though top opening batsman Wendell Smith may be missing through an injury. Stars have not beaten them there in five years and could be haunted by the drought.
"Over the years they have struggled against us at Wellington Oval, the wicket there has for some reason assisted our bowlers much more during our match-ups so we are very optimistic about our chances,'' said Smith.
Like Stars, Southampton won the other division race last Sunday and will attempt to make it a double against their strongest challengers all season at Devonshire tomorrow.
"There are not that many good teams in the division and we have been sort of cruising. But Devonshire are our strongest opponents and we will have to be sharp if we are going to beat them on Sunday,'' said skipper Jones.
