PHC, parish need coaches
already begun intensive searches for new coaches following the resignations of their head men.
Both Alfred Eve and Johnny Nusum have have quit the coaching posts they held last season at PHC and Hamilton Parish respectively, bringing about the vacancies.
But while Eve's departure was expected, Nusum's came as somewhat of a surprise. Although the recently completed season ended in disappointment for the Peppers, he was widely respected at the club.
Following promotion in 1991, Nusum stunned local soccer in leading the Peppers to the semifinal of the Dudley Eve Trophy competition in 1992. Their demise was equally as swift as they were relegated a year later and could only muster a fifth place finish in the Second Division in 1993-94.
Still, Nusum noted that he had intimated his intention to step down to the club's hierarchy before the start of last season and was merely following through on the plan.
"We parted on good terms,'' said Nusum, who was set to enter his sixth year at the helm.
Conversely, Eve's appointment was originally announced as an interim measure after the Zebras found themselves caught in a bind with the sudden departure of Jack Castle a few weeks before the season following an internal dispute.
Like Parish, PHC struggled throughout the 1993-94 campaign while fielding a largely inexperienced squad.
Ironically, both Nusum and Castle have been linked to the now vacant position at the Warwick club, with the latter apparently having patched up his differences with the club.
Another name mentioned has been that of senior player Ty Williams, a fixture in goal for the Zebras over the past decade and one who remains popular with the team's younger players.
While Castle and Williams were unavailable for comment, Nusum, who started his career at PHC, dispelled any notion of a return `home' this year.
"I've heard those rumours too,'' Nusum told a Royal Gazette reporter, "and they're just that...rumours.
"My intentions are to take it easy this season and then decide on what to do next year.'' Meanwhile, Eve said that he would be more than willing to lend assistance to his successor and remained dedicated to the club and its programmes.
"I've always been involved with PHC and wherever help is needed I would give it to them,'' said Eve.
